BPC-157 (Body Protective Compound 157) is a 15-amino acid peptide sequence derived from human gastric juice protein. It is one of the most widely researched peptides in the field of regenerative medicine, with a substantial body of animal and in-vitro studies documenting its effects on tissue repair and healing.
Research has focused primarily on its ability to accelerate recovery of damaged tissues including tendons, ligaments, muscles, and the gastrointestinal lining. It has also been studied for its effects on the nervous system, inflammatory pathways, and vascular growth.
Unlike many peptides, BPC–157 demonstrates systemic effects when administered – meaning its healing activity is not limited to the site of application. It has shown a strong safety profile across animal studies, with no observed toxic dose established to date.
Key research areas include:
- Tendon and ligament repair
- Gastrointestinal healing and gut permeability
- Muscle and wound healing
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Neurological protection and dopamine system modulation
- Angiogenesis and blood flow enhancement
- Tendon & Ligament Repair BPC-157 has been shown to upregulate growth hormone receptors in tendon fibroblasts, accelerating collagen synthesis and tendon-to-bone healing. Multiple animal studies have demonstrated significantly faster recovery from surgically induced tendon transection compared to controls.
- Gastrointestinal Protection BPC-157 protects and heals the gastrointestinal mucosa. Studies have demonstrated efficacy in models of inflammatory bowel disease, gastric ulcers, and intestinal fistula repair. It modulates nitric oxide (NO) signalling, which plays a key role in gut mucosal integrity.
- Angiogenesis BPC-157 promotes the formation of new blood vessels through VEGF pathway modulation, improving blood supply to damaged tissue — a key factor in accelerated healing.
- Nervous System & Dopamine Modulation Research has explored BPC-157’s neuroprotective effects and its ability to counteract dopaminergic system disruption, including studies on traumatic brain injury and neurotoxin-induced damage models.
- Anti-Inflammatory Activity BPC-157 consistently reduces inflammatory markers across tissue types, without the immunosuppressive side effects associated with corticosteroids.
